The Delegation Of SWJTU Visited British Universities

On October 6-11, 2019, the SWJTU delegation led by Professor Xiao-yun Feng, Vice President of SWJTU, was invited to visit the University of Birmingham, the University of Nottingham and the University of Leeds. Professor Wei-rong Chen, Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Professor Ma Lei, vice dean, Professor Huang De-qing and Professor Chen Min-wu were accompanied on the trip.

On 7 October, the delegation visited the University of Birmingham and met with Sir. David Eastwood, vice-chancellor (China), Professor Jon Frampton, director of the China Institute, Professor Ian Jefferson, dean of the School of Engineering, and the director of the university of Birmingham's international division and school of engineering. Vice President Feng Xiao-yun and President David Eastwood signed the memorandum of understanding between SWJTU and the University of Birmingham. According to the memorandum, the two sides will further strengthen the cooperation in talent training and scientific research in the field of rail transit.

On October 8, the delegation visited the Railway Research Centre, the University of Birmingham and had in-depth talks with Professor Clive Roberts, director of the Centre, Professor Anson Jack, director of the International Department of the Centre, and associate professor Stuart Hillmansen, associate professor Pietro Tricoli, associate professor Lei Chen and associate professor Tian Zhong-bei on the cooperation in the field of traction power supply and power electronics and power transmission.

The two sides agreed to fully promote the deep cooperation and to carry out the joint application for international cooperation projects and research bases, scholar exchanges and co-trainings.

On the afternoon of October 7, the delegation also talked with the director of CRRC Times Electric UK Innovation Center (TEIC) in Birmingham. There was broad agreement on the talent training and scientific research cooperation in the field of high-power semiconductor devices.

On October 9, the delegation visited the University of Nottingham and met with Mr. Richard Masterman, associate vice chancellor, Mr. Jason Feehily, director of Nottingham Confucius Institute, Mr. Joshua Hawkins, director of Global Affairs Center, and Mr. Sally Zhou, senior director of Asian Affairs Center. The broad consensus go on the further cooperation in the graduate training, scientific research, green transportation and new energy.

On the afternoon of 9 October, the delegation visited the Power Electronics, Electrical Machinery and Control Research Centre (PEMC) of the University of Nottingham, which is the world’s largest and leading research team with outstanding advantages in power electronics device packaging and simulation, smart grid, motor drive and other fields. The delegation had warm discussions with Professor Mark Sumner, Professor Pericle Zanchetta, Associate Professor Paul Evans, Associate Professor Yang Tao, and Researcher Li Ke. The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in postgraduate co-training, international academic conferences and cooperative research.

On October 10-11, the delegation visited the University of Leeds, met respectively with Mr. Yu Hai-sui, dean of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Executive Vice President of the University of Leeds, Professor Peter Jimark, dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Rob Kelsall, dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Professor Roland Clarke, deputy dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Mr. Shane Xie, director of Robot and Electromechanical Integration, Professor Andrew Kemp, British diector of Leeds College of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Professor Li Kang, Professor Ian Robertson, Professor Richard Romano, director of Driving Simulation Centre, associate professor Peter Brooks from School of Mechanical Engineering, etc.The two sides agreed to promote continuously the education of SWJTU-Leeds College with high efficiency and quality, and further cooperate in talent training and scientific research. During the visit, Professor Chen Wei-rong and Professor Rob Kelsall signed a Memorandum of Understanding.The British side introduced the basic information of the school of engineering at the university of Leeds and the future plans of the UK's high-speed rail research center, and expressed its determination to seek positive breakthroughs in high-speed rail technology and strong willingness to cooperate.The Chinese side introduced the basic information of southwest jiaotong university, the latest research progress in the field of rail transit, and the characteristics and advantages of the school of electrical engineering.The two sides also reviewed the joint educational project of Leeds college of southwest jiaotong university and conducted in-depth discussions on issues of common interest.The two sides agreed to build on the good foundation of the joint undergraduate training of Leeds college, continue to promote the education of Leeds college with high efficiency and quality, and further expand the in-depth cooperation in talent training and scientific research.During the visit, dean Chen weilong of the school of electrical engineering of southwest jiaotong university and dean Rob Kelsall of the school of electrical and electronic engineering of the university of Leeds and the university of Leeds signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
